WW2During the Second World War, my grandma was about 16. She was taken to a concentration camp by the Nazis for only one reason, because she was a Jew. After days of tedious work and mysterious disappearances, rumor spread that this was where they would be killed. The 5th of July was going to be the day of the mass killing, but my grandma was prepared for anything. On the night of the 4th, my grandma and her blind mother dressed up as maids and stealthily escaped. As my grandma ran with her mother, she felt pure fear. The consequences would be severe if they were caught, torture. But that night, the Germans were so drunk it took them a couple of hours to realize that my grandma had escaped. When they did, they ran full throttle to find my grandma. Meanwhile, my grandma was having trouble with her blind mother, who wasn't a good runner. But a young man, who was part of the underground resistance, was accompanying them. He carried her with ease. The Germans dogs were tracking them down though and before long, my grandma could hear the dogs nearing. They quickened pace and as they turned a bend, they saw the river, a place where they're tracks would end. They jumped in the water and were half way across when the Germans came. The Germans took out a machine gun and the young man suddenly pushed my grandma's head underwater. The man was shot to death with the machine gun, in front of my grandma's own eyes. She looked away, tears running down her crimson cheeks, and ducked underwater. Holding her mother tight, she started swimming underwater while bullets penetrated the water above. She was too far underwater for the bullets to hit her. As she surfaced water, she saw the Germans in the distance. She was finally safe from the death grip of the Nazis. by David J.-G. |
