Camp Mather

Feeling the dust swirl around your feet

Running down towards the lake

Gravel underfoot

Girls comparing swimsuits and pedicures

Laughing so hard you fall over backwards

Into the water

But that was also probably because

Your friend pushed you

Slapping the mosquitoes that feed

Upon your flesh

Until all that is left is a bloody mess

And stinging skin

Attempts at tans

You'll only get a sunburn

Freckles sprout up on your cheeks

Playing Spit, B.S., and poker

In the dark of the night

There's a bear twenty feet away from you

Your cousin, friend, and brother all run into the cabin

Giggling in terror

As it rips up the bark on a tree

Wearing all black at night

So you can sneak down to the lake

And watch

The rowdy teens pretend they're lifeguards

While slapping your hand over your mouth

To keep from busting up laughing

And giving yourself away,

Movies at night

Candy every day

Making fun of the girl who sang Flander's Fields

Or whatever it's called

The week rushes past in a blur

You try to make it last long each year

But it never works

And soon it's over

Camp Mather
