Bay Area Writing Project
Summer Young Writers' Camp

About The Bay Area Writing Project's
Summer 2005 Young Writers' Camps

This sumer program offers a unique opportunity for students entering grades 4 to 8 to develop their writing talents. Under the guidance of experienced UC Berkeley/Bay Area Writing Project (BAWP) Teacher Consultants, students will have a chance to grow as writers. In an atmosphere that is optimal for young writers, students will become better writers in the process of practicing their craft.

In a friendly and supportive setting, students receive specific writing instruction and conference individually with instructors to build and reinforce their writing skills. Instructors are exemplary classroom teachers who serve as BAWP Teacher Consultants through the University of California, Berkeley.

What to Expect at BAWP's Young Writers' Camp

The Bay Area Writing Project's Young Writers' Camp offers students the time and opportunity to explore their writing interests, discover their strengths and learn more about the craft of writing. The camps provide in-depth writing instruction, structured writing workshop time, flexibility in writing assignments, and daily opportunities to share writing with peers. Through the camps, students discover the conditions and habits needed to do their best writing and grow in their confidence and skill. Students are encouraged to continue as writers independently and apply these skills and habits to carve out time to write in and out of school While students wil learn to edit their writing for correctness, the camps do not include formal grammar and spelling lessons, homework or tests.

During the three weeks, in grade-level groups, students will:

  • write in a friendly and supportive setting
  • receive specific instruction in various aspects of writing
  • conference with instructors
  • share writing in small groups and receive helpful response
  • edit and publish their writing
  • use literature and poetry as models
  • explore a variety of ways to celebrate writing
  • have fun and make new friends!

The camp experience includes:

  • daily writing workshops
  • activities to activate the imagination and subdue the inner critic
  • building skills in listening and response
  • journal writing
  • instruction on specific writing styles
  • art projects to complement and draw out students' writing
  • activities that help create a safe and productive environment for creative minds

The Bay Area Writing Project is a collaborative program of UC Berkeley and Bay Area schools, dedicated to improving writing and the teaching of writing. Since 1974, BAWP has been the guiding force in reshaping the teaching of writing in Bay Area schools, kindergarten through university.
