For the past 10 years Peralta Elementary School has been a model site for arts integration in the Bay Area. Located in North Oakland, the Peralta campus is a testament to the arts program that has become part of the fabric of the schools’ core curriculum. PUTTING THE ART IN LANGUAGE ARTS: BUILDING VEHICLES FOR THINKING CRITICALLY
Grades 6-12
Regina Woodard, Oakland Unified School District
In this workshop we will experience the integration of art and writing in explorations of identity. We will look at student writing samples that demonstrate their practice of writing in visual arts courses, how students create art pieces about identity, and how students apply concepts such as symbol, metaphor and analogy to their own work through writing.
WHAT’S A DIALOGUE POEM? A SPOKEN WORD VENN DIAGARAM!
Grades 5-8
Kristin Papania, Mission Education Center, San Francisco
Come join us as we explore social studies themes and critical thinking using movement, theater and poetry in a collaborative atmosphere. We'll engage in a cycle of artistic and linguistic inquiry as we bring art into our classrooms.
CREATIVE WRITING IN AN ART BOX
Grades K-8
Danny Wong, Multilingual Programs, San Francisco
Imagine your students reading a poem they wrote and showing the class their creative piece in a beautiful artbox to the class. In this workshop, you will learn and practice engaging strategies that integrate writing with visual art. This activity will help you motivate student learning in a fun and creative way.
TEACHERS AS WRITERS WORKSHOP
WRITE INTO SPRING: SPRING INTO WRITING
All Grades
Marty Williams, John O’Connell High School, San Francisco
(and former BAWP Co-Director)
Bring your favorite notebook and we will write our way into spring together. We will read some short pieces about this time of year and write about the world around us. Weather permitting, we will venture out into the spring morning to write about what we find. Plan to share some of your writing from this gathering and leave with ways to keep writing throughout the season.
