Invitational Summer Institute

The BAWP Invitational Summer Institute is at the heart of the project and with our experience over the years, we can be clear about its purposes:

  • to identify successful teachers of writing across all curriculum areas in Bay Area schools and colleges who will be effective teachers of other teachers
  • to identify approaches to the teaching of writing and the uses of writing-to-learn in all subject areas that have been successful in real classrooms and that add to the profession's knowledge
  • to involve teachers in their own writing so that they can better help their students
  • to examine basic issues of equity and access as they affect student learning
  • to make current research in the field available to teachers

Through the institute each summer, BAWP builds its corps of Teacher Consultants, expands its collective knowledge and increases its capacity to address complex issues and concerns regarding literacy in Bay Area schools.

In 2002, we invited 20 teachers, kindergarten through university, to the Berkeley campus to participate as BAWP Summer Fellows in the Invitational Summer Institute, supported by a summer stipend. At the end of the summer program, Fellows will be BAWP Teacher Consultants, an expanding network of exemplary Bay Area educators.

BAWP Teacher Consultants become part of the BAWP community, a lively, collegial network which offers resources and programs for deepening your knowledge about the teaching of writing and literacy issues, opportunities to grow as a writer, and ongoing support to realize new projects and initiatives.

Each year, we seek strong classroom teachers, school principals and other educators who are helping students become better writers, who promote equity for all students and who are interested in taking on leadership in the ongoing work of the Bay Area Writing Project.
