USING AUTHOR STUDIES, Grades K-3 Grace Morizawa, Lake Elementary School, San Pablo, In an author study the class reads and studies the literary works of an author together. See how to put together an author study so students learn strategies to think through themes, important connections to text, and other features of stories to make meaning of text, discover mentor authors for writing, and enjoy literature.
COMPARING PERSPECTIVES: DEVELOPING CRITICAL ANALYSIS THROUGH SOCIAL STUDIES, Grades 3-5 Genevieve Schmidt Camacho, César Chavez Elementary School, San Francisco The standard social studies curriculum excludes many voices, leaving little room for the development of critical thinking skills. In this workshop, participants will examine a fourth grade unit designed to supplement textbook lessons in order to help students develop analysis, questioning and reading with a critical eye.
Academic writing often feels like unknown territory to students who feel most at home with personal narratives. What to do? In this workshop, participants will explore strategies to help make expository writing more accessible to all students, especially struggling writers and second-language learners.
–– TEACHERS AS WRITERS –– Adam David Miller, Poet Please join local poet and lecturer Adam David Miller for a morning of writing and sharing. Participants will read some poetry, get a couple of good starts on work of their own, and then pick one to revise and share with the group. You can expect to leave with at least one solid draft and several specific ideas for revision you can use with your own work. Activities are also appropriate for students of all grade levels.
