'Haveli' by Suzanne Fisher Staples
It was a wonderful book! LOVED IT!! It was so much better than the first book, Shabanu. She married an old man in the first book. Find out about her life married to an old geezer. Even though he is nice, he's old...so yeah. It is very, very good at the end. SO FINISH IT!! review by: Helen L. HR 204/8 Genre: Historical Fiction. Available from: Ms. Turnbull's Classroom Library

Picture the Girl , by Audrey Shehyn
This book goes to all the girls out there.W hen you start this book you won't want to put it down. It's about a bunch of girls trying to live life and how complicated stuff happened durin g their teen life. Some stuff you can connect with them. You feel like they are a part of you if you are one of the people that say, "this never happens to no one but me." You should read the book and share the same stuff or feelings. review by: Shorty -
No More Dead Dogs by Gordon Korman
Extremely funny. The main character whose first name is Wallace, and his last name is Wallace. (Wallace Wallace) He is very witty and humorous. Some things in the book include: Letters to Julia Roberts and mysterious acts of vandalism on the school play, "Old Shep, My Pal." Will Shep live to see another day? - reviewer: Helen L.-

Mr. Tai's 7th Period class is in the computer lab this week with me, learning how to evaluate Web sites, cite sources, search databases, and find books in the library's online catalog. Teachers, please talk to me about signing up your classes for similar lessons -- or, better yet, we can collaborate on helping students do a particular research project! Here's an interesting article in the New York Times, "Trying to Find Solutions in Chaotic Middle Schools" --the first in a series called "The Critical Years" that looks at changing theories of how middle school should be taught. [ # Posted to Library Media Center.] Tuesday, January 2, 2007
You may notice that the library is getting a new look! I spent some time over the break changing things around and putting some of the newest, most interesting books up front. I also created a reading area with a couch . We should be receiving brand-new furniture, computers, and books in the near future. Hopefully, the changes will encourage students and staff to visit the library. Please let me know if you have any suggestions, or questions about where to find books. [ # Posted to Library Media Center.]
The library will be open at lunch starting Jan. 2 -- except for Mondays (or Tuesdays after Monday holidays), when the UBC meeting takes place in the library -- so that students can check out books and do research. I will meet students who have passes at the front door at 12:30. Teachers, please send students to the library to get passes, or get passes from me to hand out to your students, and encourage them to come in to read/check out books during lunch. Thanks! With the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday coming up, I have placed biographies and other related titles on display around the library. There are also videotapes on display next to the TV/VCR sign-up book for teachers to check out. Please feel free to check out the books on display, and ask if you need other materials! Staff members had so many good comments and suggestions on their survey forms that I wanted to respond to some of them individually. So here goes:
Any chance kids could come use the library at lunch?
Absolutely! Starting Jan. 2, the library will be open at lunch on most days. I will have passes for 15 students, and will meet them downstairs at 12:30. Please get passes from me in the morning if you would like to hand some out, or send students to the library to get a pass before lunch.
Could you bring a rolling cart into my room that has new fiction and kids could check them out after booktalks?
Yes, yes, yes! I would love to do that. Just drop me a note or stop by the library to let me know when you would like me to visit your classroom. I will also be handing out forms you can fill out and put in my box.
I would like to have the children fully use the library -- for books, reading to them and to use both computers and written references for general knowledge acquisition.
Me, too. Please let me know what types of assignments and projects your students are working on, and we will plan for them to visit the library or computer lab for short research skills lessons followed by time for library research. I would especially like to teach students to use the databases available free from the public library.
I might come in if I had a chalk/white board to use.
Would a permanently set up screen and DVD player or multimedia projector be feasible?
Both great ideas. Let's talk more about these! [ # Posted to Library Media Center.]
The results of our student and staff surveys are in, and the results will be very helpful to me as I order new books and make changes to the library. Thank you so much to everyone who filled out a survey. Three staff members even filled it out online!
Below are the survey results for staff and students. Interestingly, both staff and students ranked "More books to read for fun or pleasure" as their very top choice. Teachers also wanted new DVDs and CDS and new books to support the curriculum. After "books to read for fun", students chose new computers and then a nicer looking library/comfy chairs as their next priority.
Staff also emphasized encouraging pleasure reading as the librarian's main role, asking for booktalks and visits to the library to check out books as the primary library services they plan to use.

Other comments: Don't be MEAN! To get new books and hire someone to dust the library because the library is so dusty. Make the library clean and big Make the books neater. Buy more books, because the books are like very old. Keep the library organized. Can you make the library a little bit full of books. More modern computers New computers Better, faster computers Let us play on the computers and download online games I suggest that if the librarian can stay longer after school, then there will be more people. Maybe a couch to sit on to read. [ # Posted to Library Media Center.] Thursday, December 14, 2006

Four of Ms. Lee's science classes visited the library today to read about oceans and ocean creatures -- the shark books in particular were a big hit! Students also took time to browse the collection and check out books to read over the winter break. I especially appreciated the students who took the time to tell me what they like to read. Manga titles such as Naruto and Dragon Ball Z were popular, as were series titles including Series of Unfortunate Events and Secrets of Droon. There were also a lot of requests for "funny books" and "scary books". I hope to order some new books for the library soon, including some of the titles students have requested. I am surveying staff and students to get their feedback on how to improve the school library media center. Teachers will receive paper versions of the surveys in their boxes, but I am also providing online versions for those who prefer to take the survey on the web.
Below are the links for the online MLK Library Surveys. You may click on the link or copy and paste the link into the address bar of your web browser. When you complete the survey and click "submit", you will then go to a thank-you page. Your feedback has then been automatically forwarded to me.
The online surveys will be available until Dec. 20, 2006, so please try to complete them before that date.
Thanks!
Ms. Doyle

Dear teachers, staff, and students,
I'm very excited to start work this week as your library media teacher. I hope I will have a chance to meet everyone soon, and to find out what hopes and suggestions you have for the library media program.
I'd like to briefly fill you in on my background. I have a Masters in Library and Information Science, a teaching credential, and a School Library Media Credential. I've been a librarian for 10 years, first as a teen librarian at Los Angeles Public Library, then a school librarian at Notre Dame High School in Belmont. For the past six years I have worked for San Francisco Public Library, as a teen and children’s librarian and then as a branch manager. When I worked at the Bayview Branch, I came to this school several times to share new books with the students, so some of you may remember me from those visits.
I love young adult books and have been reviewing them for professional journals for the past 10 years. I'm also very much interested in technology, particularly web sites, podcasting, wikis, and blogging. I have a web site and blog at www.teenlibrarian.com.
I hope you will drop by the library to say hello! I'm looking forward to working with you, and to making the library media center at Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Academic Middle School a truly invaluable resource.

Here's an interesting and perhaps lucrative assignment for you "wanna'be" artists. We need website banner designs for our new domain of MLK weblogs. Follow along as we glimpse the kinds of designs we're looking for. You then get to try your own design on an 11 inch by 4 inch piece of stratch paper. Mr. Mc, Mr. D. and Ms. Claxton will select the best from the lot. Then you get to redo the design on some high quality art paper with pastel paints.
The area circled in yellow below is where your design will go:

The background color will be blue or black. To see an example of how it might look if you did a "tag" design, click mlkNews.
Here are some other sample banners:
- MLK Home - Draw a picture to replace the drawing of our school building.
- eduBlogger Network - This is actually a slow motion photograph of a neon light display, but you could draw something this abstract and colorful.
- bryanBell - This shows a simple way to use old photgraphs.
- sf Ed Access - This is a sillohette of the San Francisco city skyline.
