About edBlogNet

The Educational Blogger Network is a community of teachers and educational professionals who use weblogs for teaching and learning. The network assists members to advance weblog integration in education.

Mission Statement

edBlogNet is a collaborative of teachers and organizations using weblogs in education. Its purpose is to help its members kindergarten through university, to access and use weblog technology for the teaching of writing and reading across the disciplines. The network provides a forum for educational professionals who use weblogs, an array of opportunities for teachers to continue their professional growth, and a framework for cooperation to deal with issues that affect the integration of weblog and other digital technologies into teaching and learning.

Membership

edBlogNet is open to any individual or organization actively engaged in education, from kindergarten through university. Membership is international. Individual members are weblog-using teachers and supervisors of programs in elementary, middle, and secondary schools, faculty in college and university departments, teacher educators, local and state agency technology specialists, and professionals in related fields.

About BAWP Sponsorship

The Bay Area Writing Project (BAWP) is a cooperative program between UC Berkeley and San Francisco Bay Area schools. For 30 years, BAWP has been a vital resource for teachers and schools in the Bay Area and beyond, not only in the teaching of writing but also as a model of professional development, teacher leadership and reform.

BAWP, founding site of the National Writing Project, has throughout its history recognized the primary importance of teacher knowledge, expertise, and leadership. Its principled practices include the following:

Teachers are the best teachers of other teachers.
Writing is a powerful and flexible tool for learning across the curriculum.
Teachers of writing should write.
Effective professional development is rooted in respect for teachers, grassroots-level shared decision making, advocacy for equity in resources and opportunity, and support for partnership and community.

These principled practices are at the heart of BAWP's support for the community building of the Educational Blogger Network. All members are expected to share leadership and help shape the work of this digital network of weblog-using educators.

Connecting Oakland, CA with Alleman, IA #

Connected Schools was created to increase intrinsic student motivation to read independently and to participate in other literacy building activities. Two fifth grade classes, one in rural Iowa and one in inner-city Oakland, California, use the discussion boards, web pages, and file sharing features of Blackboard.com to get to know each other in a safe and collaborative learning environment. Students use discussion boards to create book clubs based on personal interests and reading preferences. This kind of authentic literacy building activity has resulted in an increase in student engagement in independent recreational reading, exposure to other students from diverse cultural backgrounds, and acquisition of skills that are required for effective electronic communication.
