Eight Points for Teaching Writing to Students of Color

From a presentation by Donda C. West, Chicago State
(as transcribed during the NCTE Conference in Atlanta, 2002)

Point 1. Emergent writers need to understand the process of writing - thinking/talking on paper.

Point 2. Emergent writers need to hear and discuss the structure of the writing process.

Point 3. Emergent writers need to become comfortable talking about the significance of what they have written; then, use this knowledge to become a better writer.

Point 4. Emergent writers need to have many experiences processing writing while using various modes and mode combinations to express their ideas.

Point 5. Emergent writers need to explore the power of words so they can utilize the beauty, beat, magic, punch. Help them find their own rhythms.

Point 6. Emergent writers must employ the conventions of grammar and how grammar works so they can express their ideas coherently.

Point 7. Emergent writers must practice the writing process as directed and most importantly on their own - by choice.

Point 8. Emergent writers must be empowered with the ability to compliment and accept compliments about their writing proficiency so they can enjoy the writing process.
