About BAWP Sponsorship
The Bay Area Writing Project (BAWP) is a cooperative program between UC Berkeley and San Francisco Bay Area schools. For 30 years, BAWP has been a vital resource for teachers and schools in the Bay Area and beyond, not only in the teaching of writing but also as a model of professional development, teacher leadership and reform.
BAWP, founding site of the National Writing Project, has throughout its history recognized the primary importance of teacher knowledge, expertise, and leadership. Its principled practices include the following:
- Teachers are the best teachers of other teachers.
- Writing is a powerful and flexible tool for learning across the curriculum.
- Teachers of writing should write.
- Effective professional development is rooted in respect for teachers, grassroots-level shared decision making, advocacy for equity in resources and opportunity, and support for partnership and community.
These principled practices are at the heart of BAWP's support for the community building of the Educational Blogger Network. All members are expected to share leadership and help shape the work of this digital network of weblog-using educators.
