It's nearly 1:00 AM and I am tired, but sleepless. I'm spending three weeks "apartment and kitty sitting" for two young friends who just married and are off on an international honeymoon. (I think they went to the tropics to escape a New York summer! Yikes!)
I actually officiated at their wedding -- a first for me. Now, I'm living in Washington Heights among Orthodox Jews and people from the Dominican Republic. (My friend told me that I would be among Dominicans and I immediately saw a whole flotilla of nuns!) The neighborhood is solidly working class and clean. But ... it's not mid-town!
Tomorrow, my husband and I will pack lunches and pile into the subway, headed for the air-conditioned glories of New York's finest independent bookstore and the New York Public Library. We'll splurge on iced coffees and be perfectly content.
The school year looms. So, unencumbered time is a luxury I intend to savor.
