Reader's Statement
I am reading a book called The Dream Keeper and other poems. This book is mostly about African American poems that were made down on generations of black people who used to be slaves.
One of my favorite poems in the book is “Wide River.” It is about a boy wanting to leave his farm and find a new place to raise his family. The poem itself actually talks about what the man is thinking and what he wants to do and how he is going to cross the river.
People think that African American Poems are just for the fun of it, when they talk about things that actually happened in history. I think if they look more closely at what the poem means, they’ll actually understand, “OK, this really happened!”
I am the type of reader who actually likes to read books that are interesting but not too interesting. More like an in between reader. Sometimes you get so lost in a book that you can’t stop, but I don’t want to do that. I want to start in one book and see if it’s good, and then read it, and then go on to another one.
One of my favorite books that I’ve read and really liked (and it won the Newberry Honor Award) is Hawk’s Hill. It’s about a lemur and a boy and they become friends. The lemur is taken from his home in the Amazon and placed where it doesn’t have that much to eat, but lots of space to run. The boy finds and tries to return it to the place where it came from. Before he returns it, he learns more about the lemur and how to take care of it. This is an amazing book!
