The Bay Area Writing Project's Young Writers' Camps offer students the time and opportunity to explore their writing interests, discover their strengths and learn more about the craft of writing. The camps provide in-depth writing instruction, structured writing workshop time, flexibility in writing assignments, and daily opportunities to share writing with peers.

Through the camps, students discover the conditions and habits needed to do their best writing and grow in their confidence and skill. Students are encouraged to continue as writers independently and apply these skills and habits to carve out time to write in and out of school. While students will learn to edit their writing for correctness, the camps do not include formal grammar and spelling lessons, homework or tests.

During the three weeks, in grade-level groups, students will:

  • write in a friendly and supportive setting
  • receive specific instruction in various aspects of writing
  • conference with instructors
  • share writing in small groups and
  • receive helpful response
  • edit and publish their writing
