NiceNet Cheat Sheet

How to Set Up a Class
  1. Get online and go to http://nicenet.org/
  2. Click on "Create a Class"
  3. Fill in the boxes (for Username, make up anything you want, that you'll be able to remember each time you log in. For Password, again, any password you want. For email, you may leave this blank or, if you want to receive an email on your personal email every time someone writes you on NiceNet, fill out your actual email...It's up to you and you can always change it later by clicking on Edit User Info. For First Name, Last Name, that's how your name will appear in the NiceNet page. I put my full name for me and then first name + last initial for the kids).
  4. Click on "Create a Class"
  5. Write down the Class Key very carefully to be used to add students to the class. Then, select the Class Key and go to File - Copy. (If you fill your email into that little box in the middle you will receive a copy of the class key info in your email, which might come in handy later).
  6. Click on "Finish Registration" (at the bottom)
Now for Adding Students (for Teacher to do or each student)
  1. Click on "joining an existing class"
  2. Click on the Class Key box and paste the Class Key in the box (or type it in if you just wrote it down)
  3. Click on "Join the Class"
  4. For Username, figure out a set way of doing usernames for all the kids. They need to be unique because if there is someone out there with that same name in the vast NiceNet clientele, it won't work. In the past, I have done things like firstname+last initial+151 (the site number of my school), as in "rebeccad151". If you just do first name and last initial (don't use full last names on the internet!) some names will almost assuredly be taken already. I recommend all lowercase for ease
  5. For Password, with younger kids, one set password for the whole class seems to work great (and make your job a lot easier).  From, say, 5th grade and up, you probably want to give them sneakier passwords. You can start with a set password for everyone and then have them go into edit user info on the first day and change their password to their own secret password (which you keep on a master list).
  6. Leave the two email boxes blank and then have them (or you) put in the full first name and only the last initial.
  7. Click on "Join the Class"
