Summer 2003: Week 6

Week 6:   Mission

Our mission this week is to continue to draft work for our MRP, peer review the first two genres from last week, and continue our research.

Please remember from the Instructions for Support Assignments the following:

Each Monday you will be given a number of assignments to complete during the coming week.  I expect that you will spend 6 hours per week completing work for this class (approximately 4 hours of individual work plus a 2 hour online class meeting each week).  Spread your work time over 4-5 days.  This will increase learning and generalization (remember how you learned in psychology class that distributed practice resulted in more learning than mass practice?) and ensure you are up to date with all the class postings, announcements, etc.

In the middle of the class (smack dab where we are) it's often easy to back off, do a little less.  In order to pull off the MRP I think you're going to have to keep moving at the same pace, not faster or harder, but also not slower and softer.

Class Meeting:  July 15, 2003

There will be NO class meeting at the MOO this week.  Instead, we will be meeting in Corbly Hall 332 to begin our Powerpoint work and converse about the status of your project.

Assignment 2.3.1:  Library Searching
Due:  July 20, 2003 (midnight)

Last week you compiled a list of the 5 most pertinent resources.  This week, find 5 more.  Send this list to the class list (feel free to post a copy into your nicenet OJ).  Use the format shown below.

Assignment 2.3.2:  Mailing Lists
Due:  Ongoing

Keep reading the postings from your mailing list.  If you are not receiving postings then you were either unsuccessful at subscribing or you have selected a low volume mailing list.  You will be reporting on the conversations that take place on your list next week so if you are on a low (or no) volume list, you might want to subscribe to something else in addition to your current subscription.

Assignment 2.3.3:  MRP:  Draft Genres (two)
Due:  July 20, 2003 (midnight)

This week you must have the drafts published to your webspace of two more genres for your MRP.  Each time you post a piece of work, revise your home page to include a link to the new genre so we can find it easily.  This means that you will revise your home page to include a link to the new genres you publish (remember when you publish a new genre to give it a unique name, such as poem1.htm or journal1.htm).

I've made available some assistance in developing your genres.  Please visit the following:

If, in your searching, you locate web sites that might be helpful to others in developing certain genres, please send them to the class list and I'll be happy to include them in the documents above.

Assignment 2.3.4:  Peer Response Groups
Due:  July 20, 2003 (midnight)

Last week each of you developed two genres (a webliography and something else) as part of your MRP.  This week, let's do peer response groups on those.  We'll be working in the groups we've used on the MOO (listed below to remind you).  Each of you must provide a peer response on both genres to each person in your group.

There are two possible ways to go about this.  One would be for you to simply send your peer review (with a copy to me) in email to the author.  The other would be for each of you to create a class on nicenet, post your genres there, have your peer responders join your class, and then respond to them on nicenet.  We'll discuss this in our class meeting tomorrow and make a final determination then about how to go about this.  After our discussion tomorrow, I'll add information here.

Updated:

Each student will create a class in nicenet to use for their draft genres.  Go to nicenet and login.  In the left hand column, click on the word "create" (it's under the "classes" section).  Follow through to create a class and make note of the class "key."

Once you have created a class, make certain that the rest of your group and Mrs. McComas have the key so they may join the class.  Post the first two genres in there and continue to post the remainder of your draft genres in nicenet.  Your group members will then visit your nicenet "class" to provide peer response to your work.

Below is the format for the information I want you to include in your peerReview/response.  Remember that this an assignment for each of you so I expect that you will be discerning and critical (not just affirmative) in reviewing each other's work.  Your responses need to be specific and useful to the author while providing them with direction about where and how their work is strong and where and how it isn't.

Format:

  • Voice:  Whose voice is this piece in?
  • Audience:  Who is this piece written for?
  • Say Back:  What do you think the author is saying with this piece?  (not what do you think they mean to say, but what are they actually saying)
  • Bless:  Find something specific in each piece that you can "bless."  You might like the originality of an idea, a particular word used, whatever.
  • Address:  Find something specific in each piece that the author should "address."  Make this something that will actually improve the quality of the piece...your group mates are counting on you to help them make their work stronger (just like you are counting on them).

Assignment 2.3.5: Read
Due:  July 20, 2003 (midnight)

To help keep you focused on your research task, please read the following article.  Develop a writing prompt and respond to that prompt.  Send your prompt and response to both the class list and post to your blog.

The Three "R"s of Inquiry:  Teaching Literacy in Academic Cultures

Send to:  cd315-list@marshall.edu
Subject:  A 2.3.5:  Inquiry and Literacy

Assignment 2.3.6: Online Journal
Due:  July 20, 2003 (midnight)

Sometime between Friday (July 18) and Sunday (July 20) at midnight, post your weekly online journal.  You will be posting your online journal entries (as well as some other items) to your blog.  Please note that this assignment, unlike most of the others, does NOT enjoy the two week completion time.  In other words, your online journal postings must be made each week (between Friday and Sunday midnight as explained in the instructions) in order to receive credit for them.  Please review the Instructions for Online Journals to ensure acceptable completion  of this assignment.
