Summer 2003: Week 5

Week 5:   Mission

Our mission this week is to catch up on old assignments, do a little library research (online, of course), and take a little breather if you are already caught up!  Remember at the beginning of class I told you that the first five weeks were the hardest?  Well, we are there...from now on, the number of assignments per week is reduced drastically, however that doesn't mean that the time you spend will reduce drastically.  The assignments you have from now on will take longer to complete, require more thought and work, and will generally focus on pulling together the MRP (multi-genre research project).  Also, pay close attention to due dates as many assignments will now be due within a week (to allow you to complete your MRP on time).

Class Meeting:  July 8, 2003

There will be NO class meeting at the MOO this week.  Please note that next week we will be meeting in Corbly Hall 332.  This is a required class meeting that will give you a chance to get started with powerpoint as well as to conference with me about your project and your class work so far.

Assignment 2.2.1:  Library Searching
Due:  July 13, 2003 (midnight)

So far, you've learned how to use the databases from the library's web page to search for scholarly (and not so scholarly) articles.  You also have an essential question and several foundation questions.  In this task, use two different databases that were introduced to us during our library visit (e.g., ERIC, Academic Search Elite, PsychLit) and complete a search for information pertinent to the topic of your project.  Compile a list of the 5 most pertinent resources.  Send this list to the class list.  Use the format shown below.

Send to:  cd315-list@marshall.edu
Subject:  Assignment 2.2.1:  Library Search 1

Include here the bibliographic information about the resource, using APA format.

Assignment 2.2.2:  Mailing Lists
Due:  Ongoing

Keep reading the postings from your mailing list.  If you are not receiving postings then you were either unsuccessful at subscribing or you have selected a low volume mailing list.  You will be reporting on the conversations that take place on your list in two week so if you are on a low (or no) volume list, you might want to subscribe to something else in addition to your current subscription.

 Assignment 2.2.3:  Project Prospectus
Due:  July 13, 2003 (midnight)

Visit the Project Prospectus instructions for information about how to complete this assignment.  When you have your prospectus published, make a link to the prospectus from your home page.  Send email to the class list letting us know the link is there.

Subject:  Assignment 2.2.3:  Project Prospectus Published

Assignment 2.2.4:  MRP:  Draft Genres (two)
Due:  July 13, 2003 (midnight)

This week you must have the drafts of two different genres for your MRP published to your webspace (the webliography counts as one of the genres required so you only have one more genre to work on if your webliography draft is published).  Consult the MRP instructions for a list of the other suggested genres you might use.

Each time you post a piece of work, revise your home page to include a link to the new genre so we can find it easily.  This means that you will revise your home page to include a link to your webliography page and a link to the new genre you publish (remember when you publish a new genre to give it a unique name, such as poem1.htm or journal1.htm).

I've made available some assistance in developing your genres.  Please visit the following:

I will be watching the developing prospectuses (yes, that is the plural form according to www.merriam-webster.com) to determine what type of genres you are planning to use and continue to locate additional resources to assist you in developing those genres.  I'll post those to the email list and to the page titled Genres (linked above).

Send to:  cd315-list@marshall.edu
Subject:  Assignment 2.2.4:  Genres 1 and 2 published

Assignment 2.2.5:  Internalizing Web Evaluations
Due:  July 13, 2003 (midnight)

Last week you spent some time evaluating web sites using three different forms and formats.  Think about what you learned about the validity and credibility of web sites from those evaluations and write about what that means to you as a web publisher (in particular, one who will be publishing academic work on the web...as you are and will be doing).  Send your thoughts to the class list.

Assignment 2.2.6: Read
Due:  July 13, 2003 (midnight)

To better understand the philosophies and how-to's of making Powerpoint presentations (which we'll be starting in the lab next week), visit the following page and read the documents linked from there (particularly those that provide "tips and tricks" and give "how-to" information).

Assignment 2.2.7: Online Journal
Due:  July 13, 2003 (midnight)

Sometime between Friday (July 11) and Sunday (July 13) at midnight, post your weekly online journal.  You will be posting your online journal entries (as well as some other items) to your blog.  Please note that this assignment, unlike most of the others, does NOT enjoy the two week completion time.  In other words, your online journal postings must be made each week (between Friday and Sunday midnight as explained in the instructions) in order to receive credit for them.  Please review the Instructions for Online Journals to ensure acceptable completion  of this assignment.
